چکیده

Objectives Weaning is a key life history milestone for mammals that represents both the end of nutritional investment from perspective mothers and start complete independence infants. The age at weaning may vary depending on ecological, social, demographic factors experienced by mother infant. Bwindi mountain gorillas live in different environmental conditions have longer interbirth intervals than their counterparts Virunga Volcanoes, yet other characteristics this population remain less well known. We use long-term data Impenetrable National Park, Uganda to examine related age. Materials methods analyzed infants born four gorilla groups quantify (defined as last nipple contact) test if sex offspring, parity, dominance rank influences weaning. also compared time conception after resumption mating gorillas. Results were weaned an average 57.5 months. No difference was found between primiparous multiparous mothers, nor did maternal influence weaning, but sons later daughters. majority still suckling when they resumed generally conceived before previous offspring. significantly After mating, conceiving next offspring not females Virungas (6 vs. 4 months). Discussion Later daughters similar findings studies great apes. are approximately same western chimpanzees, which more year results study suggest variation ecological populations living close geographic proximity can result patterns, has implications understanding evolution unique patterns humans.

Minerals in the Foods Eaten by Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei)

Minerals are critical to an individual's health and fitness, and yet little is known about mineral nutrition and requirements in free-ranging primates. We estimated the mineral content of foods consumed by mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Mountain gorillas acquire the majority of their minerals from herbaceous leaves, which constitu...

Early brain growth cessation in wild Virunga mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei).

Understanding the life history correlates of ontogenetic differences in hominoid brain growth requires information from multiple species. At present, however, data on how brain size changes over the course of development are only available from chimpanzees and modern humans. In this study, we examined brain growth in wild Virunga mountain gorillas using data derived from necropsy reports (N = 3...

Personality dimensions and their behavioral correlates in wild Virunga mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei).

Studies of animal personality improve our understanding of individual variation in measures of life history and fitness, such as health and reproductive success. Using a 54 trait personality questionnaire developed for studying great apes and other nonhuman primates, we obtained ratings on 116 wild mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) monitored by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Karisok...

Diversity of Microsporidia, Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

BACKGROUND Infectious diseases represent the greatest threats to endangered species, and transmission from humans to wildlife under increased anthropogenic pressure has been always stated as a major risk of habituation. AIMS To evaluate the impact of close contact with humans on the occurrence of potentially zoonotic protists in great apes, one hundred mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beri...

Giardia in mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), forest buffalo (Syncerus caffer), and domestic cattle in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.

Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are critically endangered primates surviving in two isolated populations in protected areas within the Virunga Massif of Rwanda, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Mountain gorillas face intense ecologic pressures due to their proximity to humans. Human communities outside the national parks...
